How each task type is scored
Knowing how a task is scored changes your strategy: where wrong answers cost points, guessing costs you.
| Scoring type | Tasks | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Correct or incorrect | Multiple Choice Single Answer, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Answer Short Question | One point if you get it right, zero if you get it wrong. |
| Partial credit | Fill in the Blanks, Reorder Paragraph, Write from Dictation | Points for each gap, each pair of paragraphs in the right order or each correct word. |
| Partial with deductions | Multiple Choice Multiple Answers, Highlight Incorrect Words | Each correct response adds a point and each error takes one away, never going below zero. |
| Several factors | Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Summarize Spoken Text | Content, form and quality of language, such as pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary. |
